At Sawrey Consulting Engineers we combine inspired design with professional techniques. We recognise that no two projects are identical and that as our client, your needs are quite specific.
Sawrey Consulting Engineers was formed in 2001, but the original firm began in 1968. We are a structural and civil engineering consultancy serving the Wellington region and beyond, with expertise in residential and commercial work. Stephen Sawrey and Kane Gilbert are our current directors and engineering principals.

Our Directors
STEPHEN SAWREY
BE FEngNZ CPEng IntPE(NZ)/APEC Engineer
Stephen is a structural engineer with over 40 years’ experience. Over this time, he has been involved in the design of new structures and the assessment and structural improvement of existing buildings. He assessed earthquake damaged buildings during the emergency periods following the Christchurch earthquakes in September 2010 and February 2011. His past appointments include NZ Structural Engineering Society management committee Wellington Structural Group (Chair), BRANZ executive, and FIDIC risk management forum. Stephen was a trustee at Wellington College, at Karori Normal School and served on other community groups.
KANE GILBERT
BE(Hons) CMEngNZ CPEng IntPE(NZ)/APEC Engineer
Kane is an engineer with over 15 years’ experience, predominantly in New Zealand, but also in the UK. During this time, he has been involved in a wide range of structural and civil engineering projects. His recent work includes large scale social housing developments, individual homes, retaining walls, and earthquake assessments and strengthening. Kane was appointed a director in December 2021; alongside Stephen, he is responsible for leadership and management of the firm, while enjoying being actively involved in the various projects that the team works on.
