At Sawrey Consulting Engineers we combine inspired design with professional techniques. We recognise that no two projects are identical and that as our client, your needs are quite specific.
Sawrey Consulting Engineers was formed in 2001, but the original firm began in 1968. We are a structural and civil engineering consultancy serving the Wellington region and beyond, with expertise in residential and commercial work. Kane Gilbert is our director and engineering principal.

KANE GILBERT | Director
BE(Hons) CMEngNZ CPEng IntPE(NZ)/APEC Engineer
Kane is an engineer with nearly 20 years of experience, primarily in New Zealand, but also in the UK. Over his career, he has contributed to a wide range of structural and civil engineering projects. His recent work includes large-scale social housing developments, bespoke homes, retaining walls, and earthquake assessments and strengthening.
Since 2021, Kane has served as a director, overseeing the firm’s leadership and management while staying actively involved in the team’s projects. He places a strong emphasis on quality and is committed to delivering exceptional service to clients.
Outside of work, Kane enjoys spending time with his family, participating in and following sports, and exploring new destinations whenever time allows.
STEPHEN SAWREY | Consultant
BE FEngNZ CPEng IntPE(NZ)/APEC Engineer
Stephen is a structural engineer with over 40 years of experience, contributing to the design of new structures and the assessment and strengthening of existing buildings. Following the Christchurch earthquakes in 2010 and 2011, he assessed earthquake-damaged buildings during the emergency response.
Stephen’s past appointments include NZ Structural Engineering Society Management Committee, Wellington Structural Group (Chair), BRANZ Executive, and FIDIC Risk Management Forum. Stephen has also been a trustee at Wellington College and Karori Normal School and served on other community groups.
After leading the team for many years, Stephen stepped down as a director in December 2024 but continues as one of our most experienced engineers.
